Static build up on the outside of the carbon
aircraft will not cause a problem on the inside.
Chances are the person pulled the fuel
caps and was working near the opening when he drew a sparc.
Always have your plane grounded when you
open the fuel tank!
For those that are building with carbon,
you often get a shock when you sand or vacuum on the carbon.

camera for inspection of Lancair fuel tanks
Posted for Matt Reeves :
You guys have me paranoid now. Are you saying it's a very real possiblity
for static from flight to cause a wing to blow up? If a guy blew up from
waxing his Lancair, how safe it is to actually fly in an environment that
creates static? My airplane is e-glass and honeycomb, not carbon fiber so
there really is no way to ground the wings.
Some expert opinions?

I would be very cautious about putting an electrical device in a fuel
cell.
One person has already blown up a Lancair wing and blown himself up in the
process, too. And that was just from sanding on the outside of the wing.
