I had a very old system, purchased in around 1995 or so, so perhaps they have longer-life batteries in the newer systems now. That would be good news, as the area I mounted my box is a bear to get to...

According to Jack Watkins at VMS, the battery in the DPU is only used for storing the engine time while the unit is off.  Typical life is about 10 yrs and replacement cost is $41.20.
