If your flange was spinning inside the strut, it needs to removed completely and reinstalled using the proper retaining compound.    When properly assembled the flange will hold on the order of 500-1000 ftlb of torque without the clamp.  Was this strut ever disassembled after being built at Esco?  I have disassembled repaired struts where the flange was reassembled with sparingly applied "Red" thread locking compound.  The break-away torque was a small "scary" fraction of what it should have been.  The flange should be installed with Loctite 601 Retaining Compound.

Absolutely, with all the other problems I have noted, that is another critical item that should be checked.....
