When properly assembled the flange will hold on the order of 500-1000 ftlb of torque without the clamp. Was this strut ever disassembled after being built at Esco? I have disassembled repaired struts where the flange was reassembled with sparingly applied "Red" thread locking compound. The break-away torque was a small "scary" fraction of what it should have been.
