Lorn, one reason that I'm putting a Strike Finder in our IV is that the XM is domestic only. Get out of the country and you're out of XM weather (maybe a few miles into Canada and Mexico). Even interstate flights can put you well out of XM coverage. Getting to Alaska or Hawaii would put you out of wx for a long way. We've got a 496 and love it. Great for domestic weather.

Bill

I have been flying for 35 years and have used both radar and strikefinders. Now I am using WX Weather in a Garmin 396.

My question is why would anyone even consider using anything other  then WX Weather? The only thing that I can figure is: they have not  seen and/or used the WX Weather. It is 500 times superior to the  other equipment. I wouldn't waste my time on installing anything  else. For backup, if I felt it necessary, I would install a second WX  Weather system.

In the last few months, I have picked my way (accurately) through 2 squall lines that have run 700 to 800 miles from the SW to the NE  along the Smoky mountains while traveling from Detroit to SE North  Carolina. To be able to see a hole in the line and get to it from  hundreds of miles away, is not possible with either radar or  strikefinders.
