Carl,
I have been to Oshkosh every year since 1998 when I went
looking for my first kit. Some years I circled the lakes for 45 minutes or
more dodging TS, but usually not. The controllers are always polite and
friendly and the vast majority of pilots do their darnest to comply with the
relatively simple instructions: Slow guys at 1800 ft and 90 kt, fast guys
500 feet higher and 35 kt faster. Land on the dot you're told to hit and
pull off the runway as soon as practicable. There is a great sense of
accomplishment when you control the plane like a professional: this past
year I squeeked the tires right on the pink dot and it was my high point of
AirVenture 2006. Hell, if 50 year-old Boners and Barons could do it, so
could Lancairs.

Scotty G:
Thank you for your excellent contribution. I have not
been to Oshkosh, but I had expected to fly the high-speed pattern if I were able
to go. After reading the rant in the AVWeb news, my first reaction was to
mentally cross Oshkosh off my list. Probably I should reconsider -- this
is just one person, and probably does not represent the standard attitude on
Oshkosh arrivals.
