Here is a quote from his book Tony Bingelis on Engines:  "anyone who installs a spinner without a proper fitting front bulkhead is begging for fate to take a swat at him"
 
Here is the ring of prepreg I used  which fits around the crush plate, just like Paul describes below.

We had two backing plates crack on an O-320, fixed pitch prop, with the Lancair 12" spinner. The slight out-of-balance of these spinners, with no forward bulkhead, would cause them to flex the backing plate and crack it. Since putting in a fibreglass-reinforced 1/4" foam forward bulkhead inside the spinner, which fits snuggly around the crush plate, there has been no more cracking on that plane, nor on my O-235.
