I have 7 (maybe 8 - too many) GPS antennae total in 2 aircraft and each is on an aluminum shelf which acts as a ground plane. Reception is great, but so is it on the Earthmate GPS that I carry on my belt! Perhaps preferred but not critical.

We have a Garmin 480 with the antenna mounted on top of the stack, under
the
padded, covered fiberglass glareshield. It picks up 8 satellites with no
problem outside the hangar. They do not require a ground plane. We also do
not have a ground plane on the Blue Mountain and it pulls in 8 satellites in
side of the airplane in the hangar!!
