I have received a copy of TSB Canada's official
accident report on N750F (LIV-4T Walter) that crashed in Canada on
August 9 2005. The report should be posted in the near future at
www.tsb.gc.ca.
The synopsis is that the aircraft was flying at FL200 and flew into
towering cumulus cloud tops. 30 seconds later it had collected enough
ice to stall and went into a spiral dive. The aircraft descended
through 11,000 feet with a calculated airspeed of 412 Kts (Mach 0.62) .
The aircraft disintegrated mid air about 8,000 AGL. Indicated airspeed
readings were indicative of an iced (blocked) pitot tube. Power was
never reduced from climb setting. The time
between leaving FL200 and impact was less than 100 seconds. Aircraft weight at the time was estimated at between
3,800 and 3,900 lbs. The owner had arbitrarily set the GTOW to 4,000
lbs, 450 pounds above the factory recommendation.
