The most foolproof method I've heard of for eliminating the edges between
base and trim colors is to mask off the trim and paint the field, remove
the masks from the trim areas and then mask the field and paint in the
trim. This allows you to build up equal thicknesses of both colors.
Needless to say this is a lot of very precise work, but apparently not so
much that it isn't done fairly routinely.
