I was always taught that winglets were a benefit that increased the effective span of a wing at high altitudes. This, over time, would lead to an increase in fuel savings/economy. It would take a while, and some effort on your part, but maybe over the next six months or a year you might run your cross country flights with similar profiles with and without winglets and see if you can prove the theory. (Well, theory to us but proven in aerodynamic texts and flight test data.)
