Tower came back "Is that the best you can do" -- I had to do another. At 300ft and 100 kts, dirty, you are not at a point from which to land on the field in the event of a problem. You are also a sitting duck in any traffic conflict. I have learned to ask before doing this at unfamiliar fields. Some places are struggling with noise or other issues.
