Hi,
I built the extended tips and made them so that they are removeable. I
stick them on when I am:-
a converting a pilot on to the Lancair because they lower the stall speed
by about 5 knots and reduce the roll rate. They also give the aircraft a
more stable feel.
b flying long distances at altitude. Above 10,000 they give me about 10
knots more speed for the same power settings.
They weight about 8 lbs and took me about 500 hours to make removeable. The
moulds were a lot better for the extensions than for the short tips, so they
were relatively easy to make. I just made it a whole lot more difficult for
myself by wanting both tips to be available. If I am truthful I would not
do it again. The Lancair is such a delight to fly why reduce the roll rate
when most of my flying is below 10,000 feet?
It looks great with them on though, so I have added a photo.
