Let's suppose a flight was being made to KDPA, a towered airport with the FSDO located on the field. Suppose further that a FAA inspector of some sort was in the tower that day. Also, the controllers generally preferred that piston singles just go somewhere else and the FAA functionary had his drawers all wadded up. A Freddy Krueger Lankair 650 called up from 12 NM out with "Dupage Tower, Lankair two eight Oscar Xray 12 West landing with Alpha." The tower replied "Experimental 8OX enter a left downwind for runway 27, report the river (whatever that means) and keep your speed below 200 knots." "Lankair 8OX slowing and will report the river on a left downwind for 27." ........... After the usual communications continued along the same lines, the Lankair landed wheels up and took out the FAA-grant Taxiway Delta identification sign! A few weeks later the builder/owner/commercial-pilot received letters from both the FAA and the insurance company. The FAA letter informed the pilot that his license was suspended for not advising the tower of the experimental nature of the aircraft per the FARS. The insurance letter denied the accident claim because, once the plane entered the class D airspace without ever informing the controller that it was an experimental aircraft, his aircraft was no longer airworthy since the aircraft airworthiness certificate required such a notification. Even worse, his license suspension cost him his job. He was arrested for destroying public property and not paying for its' restoration. The airplane became the property of the repair shop since there was no money to pay for repairs. His wife divorced him because he was unable to work and pay the rent on their Elm Street home. How can anyone wonder why Freddy became what he is now? All of this because the call-up didn't have that magic "experimental" word in it........ Everthing would have been different if only Freddy had said, "Dupage Tower, Experimental Lankair two eight Oscar Xray 12 West landing with Alpha." And, best of all, there would be no "Friday the 13th" movies. Grayhawk PS Ron, keep trying to get this fixed. -------------------------------1132331182 Content-Type: text/html; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
