The way this has worked for me in a C182/A (no TSO'd GPS) when initiated by
ATC
because they want me out of the way is:
ATC: Can you go XYZ direct. (XYZ is a hundred miles away)
C182: unable - I am /A but I do have a hand held GPS
ATC: What heading does your GPS show to XYZ
C182: zero niner three
ATC: C182 cleared radar vectors heading zero niner three until direct XYZ.
I will now have to try requesting radar vectors from my side.
I never thought of it enroute.
