 I seem to remember reading many years ago of a  Vickers Viscount (British
4-engine turboprop) airliner that hit a goose in the mid flight levels in
Canadian airspace.  The impact apparently caused structural failure; the
aircraft was lost; all aboard perished.
 
 Can't be sure of the details now, but I believe the story was more than just
folklore.
