You obviously know the answer to your own question. Because, if left uncontrolled it can lead to very bad things. It's just that when we say that an engine was destroyed by detonation, that is generally incorrect. I think it beneficial to understand and appreciate the real mechanism that DE-constructed that engine you mentioned.
Furthering our understanding is always in our best interest.

Well, just like HIV is the precursor to AIDS, isn't detonation the precursor to pre-ignition (I know there are other ways to get pre-ignition). If detonation wasn't bad, why worry about it? Scott |
