I am introducing a question from a friend
, who doesn't speak English, owner of a Lancair 235. He changed his engine
,installing a Lycoming O 320 D3G in lieu of the O 235.
The propeller for the O 320 D3G was initially a
three blades ,constant speed ,made by Arplast, but he is having some problems
with it , as it is a prototype.
He has the possibility to get a Hartzell
propeller, type HC-C2YL-1BF,coming from a Lyc. O320-D1F and asks if this
propeller can be cut to 70" and fit his
L 235/320,cruising at a mere 170/180
KIAS.
Has anybody some advice about that problem?
Waiting for reading from you , propeller
specialits.
I recently put a MT 3-blade prop on my
235/320. It has a built-in 4" extension and fit perfectly.
It
is 63" in diameter and I feel that the ground clearance is minimal.
Remember that the 235 airframe is closer to the ground than the 320. No
way would I put on a 70" prop.
With a prop
as short as mine, I was told that a 3rd blade is necessary to handle the
horsepower of the IO320.

I am with Bob on this one. I have 64" prop on my
235/320. With this prop, and the nose gear strut pumped up a little extra
(3" showing), there is 8" of prop to ground clearance. With a 70" prop,
there would only be 5" of ground clearance.
That is not good.
