Lancair or KCI provides the parts for a kit. When I tested the first IV it had an empty weight of 1800 lbs. It was overbuilt so that in future if people put more junk into them there would be some margin to grow into. (who could of guessed how much)As a provider of kits it is not their job or responsibility to test anything at all. Lancair did however do extensive testing just so they would know what they had. When I issue an experimental certificate to an aircraft I ask the manufacture (the builder) what weight and airspeed limits he wants. If he uses lancair data to form his numbers thats fine(if he built his plane exactly as KCI's) but as the manufacture he or she may use other methods to determine this data. Or they may decide that the lancair data is ok but lower their safety margin. At no time does Lancair approve or have any say on how you build your plane thats why you are the manufacture.
