The first direct injection aircraft engine of which I am aware was on the
B-29. That was 1945.
It's not a new concept. Being able to make it work properly and being cost
effective may be a new development. <g> Here's hoping.
So far, there have been several attempts at this. While they have worked,
none has proven worth the extra expense and complexity in aircraft engines.
They can be a maintenance nightmare. (ask the guys who work on FiFi. IIRC,
they've switched them back to carbureted engines.)
