There are so many ways to skin a cat – Here’s a BMW way:

The V-12 engine is an all-aluminum 6.0-liter rated for 400 horsepower. Figures are not yet available, but Purves said “this new 12-cylinder features BMW’s innovative Valvetronic technology, which helps achieve remarkable fuel economy.”

Valvetronic allows for infinitely variable intake valve stroke, or lift, which is the amount the valves open. This design completely does away with the butterfly valve found in the air intake stream of almost all engines. The V-12 is also BMW’s first direct-injection gasoline (DIG) engine, in which the fuel injectors squirt gas directly into the combustion chambers rather than immediately outside the intake valve or farther up the air intake stream. Direct injection provides for even more precise fuel metering than does sequential port fuel injection. This fuel-injection design, combined with Valvetronic and BMW’s Double-VANOS continuously variable valve timing, results in greater control over efficiency and emissions than ever before in a BMW.

Hmmmmm, does that mean each of the 12 intake valves must open exactly the same amount to equalize the power produced by each cylinder or perhaps it is not important when you are using 12 cylinders.  Also, so much for modern engines using the intake valves for vaporizing the fuel.

Here is some interesting info on a high revving (yeah, two "v"s look like a "w") engine:

Part of CBR600RR details – interesting on what can be done to an engine:

·  New intake port shape and redesigned exhaust for lighter weight and increased mid-range power.

·  New piston surface treatment for reduced friction.

·  Fuel injection flow increased to match intake and exhaust system changes.

Unique features:

·  Dual Stage Fuel Injection (DSFI) system features two injectors per cylinder.

·  Liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve 599cc four-stroke inline four-cylinder engine features oversquare bore and stroke of 67mm x 42.5mm.

·  Iridium-tip spark plugs improve fuel combustion and performance.

·  Dual Stage Fuel Injection system features two injectors per cylinder--one upper and one lower--controlled by an ECU that senses rpm and throttle opening. Lower injector enhances rideability while upper injector improves top-end horsepower. At lower rpm only the lower injector is working. Above 5500 rpm both injectors are activated. The system uses 40mm throttle bodies.

·  Denso injectors with 12 holes per injector deliver a finely atomized fuel mixture for optimum combustion efficiency and power.

·  Auto enriching system is integrated into PGM-FI module, eliminating the need for a manual choke.

·  Two-stage ram-air system provides a high volume of cool air to the airbox for linear power delivery and incredible engine performance.

·  Cylinder head features angled valve inset to improve airflow.

·  Cylinder head features two springs per intake valve and two springs per exhaust valve for optimum high-rpm valve operation and durability.

·  Light pistons, piston pins and nutless connecting rods contribute to higher-revving engine.

·  Pistons receive new moly surface treatment for reduced friction.

·  Lightweight aluminum oil cooler.

Worth reading for comparison purposes –  just another injection system - read all of it if you are not bored by now, including definitions:

Hey, if you are running one of those new diesel aircraft engines, take a look at the mid page of this pdf for a propane injection system to deliver more Torque/HP so you can race at Reno with your barbeque propane tank in the back of your "bomb."
