There are three blade type connectors in the alternators receptacle housing. Only one connection is used for the field wire.  Note however that two of the wire connector tabs in the alternator housing are internally connected together and they can both be connected to the field wire for redundancy.

Interesting.  I didn't answer the original problem because I never had such a difficulty.  However, I now remember that B&C recommends that do use all the tabs and, as you say, double connect the two field tabs for greater stability.  It is also useful to smear some dilectic grease on the contacts.
