By disconnecting the push-rod and removing the screws that attach the aileron hinge to the edge of the wing, you can take the whole aileron to the work bench, hinges and all, and install a new hinge pin with ease. The wing-side of the hinges can be re-attached easily if one makes a tool to insert thru a wing attach hole and into the hole in the hinge. A piece of safety wire (or equivalent) with a little hook on the end will do nicely. Once you get a screw started, the rest is easy. Bill Harrelson's advice to drill a #60 hole at each end of the hinge and install some safety wire to block each end of the hinge barrel is the best thing to do by far! While you're at it, it's also a good idea to install a stainless pin with Teflon tubing over it (often mentioned here in the past) instead of the standard hinge pin material. (I'm sure the posts that contain that info is available in Marv's archives). I had to replace several hinges over time (aileron and elevator) due to excessive wear until I installed the SS wire/Teflon pins. They have been wear-free for years since. By the way, your experience certainly reinforces the validity of the pre-flight!!! Dan Schaefer Early 235 N235SP
