It went on line on September
22, 1952. With the computing power of a modern-day handheld calculator, Illiac
had 2,800 vacuum tubes and weighed 10,000 pounds. It was more than 10 ft long, 2
ft deep, and 8 ft high, with a 4k(words) main memory and 12k(words) Drum memory.
Now, just 43 years later, I am sitting at a relatively inexpensive 2.6
GHz, 1 Gb ram, 110 Gb Hard drive Dell computer - 1 of several in my broadband
wireless network.
My aircraft engine was designed 60 years ago and needs a computer badly since
the one that sits on my shoulders can't quite optimize each combustion
event.
Some things advance more rapidly than others.
And a Hand Held Calculator.
