Tom:
Just as a point of reference, here is my prop strike story. I am not
advocating that you skip the TDI, but...
I struck my prop on the runway during a porpoised landing (see photo,
the other blade was a perfect match!). No sudden stoppage, no other
indications of the strike other than a momentary buzzing noise from the
front of the airplane (rpm was fairly high as I was powering up for a go
around, unfortunately too late!). My insurance company said the TDI was
up to my A&P, but if he thought it was necessary, they would pay for it.
Of course, he did think it was necessary (for his revenue stream, if
nothing else!). The prop was shipped off to a prop shop, who inspected
the hub and pronounced it undamaged, but subject to Hartzell's policy
that it be replaced. The engine components were shipped off to specialty
shops, who found no damage to any dynamic components. The prop flange on
the crank was mic'ed and found to be dead true. Other than the blades,
nothing else in the power train was damaged (as far as the techies could
tell!).
Your mileage may vary!
