Marv:
My light posting from the other day has genereate some interest. Here's what my reply has been the the inquiries about my taxi/landing lights. Hope this proves useful to others:
The light is a GE MR-16 12-V 50W bulb obtained at Home Depot. The one shown in the photo is a "flood" lamp and has a glass front already attached to the bulb. This fuxture is mounted to the nose gear as shown. The fixture is a projector fixture QLV-1 which I obtained at an electrical supply company here in San Diego. The cost of the bulb was about $10 and the fixture was about $7. I also have the same fixtures with 50W "spot" bulbs located in each wing. These bulbs also came with the glass front already installed.
The nose gear mounted, switch activated taxi light is attached tthrough a relay which disables the light whenever the gear switch is in the up position. The wing mounted landing/pulse lights are controlled by a 3-position switch OFF-ON-PULSE. The PULSE position controls a CODE-3 HL-360 alternating "WIG-WAG" relay which was obtained from a local commercial vehicle lighting company for about $90.
The lights have been installed in my plane for 1100 hours and have never needed replacing. The wig-wag relay has had to be replaced twice in that time.
Great system! Cheap! Reliable!
Good luck with your projects!
