Responding to Rob's post about the new Chelton EFIS system and correcting a
few things:
Chelton did not kill off the IDU1 system. That system is called
the Sierra EFIS-SV Pro. It still includes the FAA Certified Crossbow 500
AHRS, Class B TAWS, WX-500 stormscope interface, Ryan TCAD or L3 Skywatch
traffic interface, WSI datalink weather interface, engine monitoring system,
etc. and is loaded with the same FAA Certified Software as the Chelton
FlightLogic. It performs to Lancair Propjet speeds in excess of 300
kts. This system is still supported and sold through authorized Sierra
dealers (such as Aerotronics, Aircraft Spruce, Avionics Systems, Lancair
Avionics, Pacific Coast Avionics, Sebastian Communications and others throughout
the US). In addition, these dealers now offer a dual-screen system which
utilizes the new IDU3 (certified) screens.
Chelton Flight Systems turned over all experimental business development to
Direct-To Avionics last May. We are the distributor for several products,
including CFS Sierra product line, Moritz engine monitoring systems for (turbine
aircraft), as well as other unique products for aircraft.
Direct-To Avionics is releasing a new, lower-cost EFIS system called the
Sierra EFIS-SV Sport. It utilizes a sensor suite tailored to the
performance of aircraft such as the RV-9 & RV-10, Lancair 320/360/FG
Legacy/SuperES, Compair, Velocity, and many other similar performing
aircraft.
The Sierra EFIS-SV Sport will include dual-screens, Garmin GPS, new
Crossbow AHRS, solid-state ADC and will be loaded with the same FAA Certified
software as the $75K FlightLogic EFIS. The system also has the new IDAI
Circuit (Integrated Digital Autopilot Interface). Not available with any
other EFIS on the market, this allows seamless lateral & vertical navigation
control through the Trutrak autopilot. The main differences between the
two systems: The Sport can be purchased without installation for those who
want to build their own instrument panel. The Sport uses a new Crossbow
AHRS which is designed for aircraft that travel up to 200kts IAS. The
Sport has no tcad interface, no stormscope interface, and no built-in
engine monitoring. It is a downsized version of the pro version. If
you purchase a supported engine monitoring system such as the Grand Rapids EIS
4000 / 6000, the Sport is capable of displaying most engine configurations
graphically as well as provide visual and aural warnings.
The Sport will cost $25K and there will be an introductory "show
special" at Sun N Fun. The offer will be available through your
favorite Chelton dealer or directly from Direct-To Avionics.
