Lorn,
Dirt. Or - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
You mean that the air flow around a reverse parabola might actually keep
most trash out of the actual Halogen bulb area? Rain, too? A cold water
drop hitting the hot bulb doesn't destroy it? If anyone has experience
flying at night in rotten weather, you certainly do. Lights on in the rain
or taxiing thru slush?
We have inquiring minds - anyone else out there run without covers?
If so (and successful), it would sure save unnecessary effort (and a lot of
screwing around) if the same would be reported here.

PS
- I have ordered "float glass" from Edmunds. The more sophisticated
heat-insensitive lenses limit light transfer and generally cost more than
$100.
