Buy a Rocky Mountain Instrument Micro Encoder.  It has internal lighting.
Also VSI, outside air temp, air speed, true air speed, altitude, density
altitude, pressure altitude, encoder for your transponder, program V speeds
and alerts, All this for about 800 bucks and you assemble it over the
weekend. Did I forget something?  Might have.  Great instrument.  If you are
VFR only you can get by with a four pack consisting of Turn and Bank
Coordinator, Attitude indicator, Micro encoder and Directional Gyro.  By the
way, the assembled version is TSO certified.  I do not know if the assembled
version is certified.
