It has been a while since I have seen the old style gear. My bird has the "Outback" gear. I remember having to drill the casting to mount the axle. If that is the case then to increase the clearence the axle has to be moved down the casting. I am dealing from my 1980's kit so I may be wrong. I agree the clearence is tight so you probably have to do something. Maybe an "Outback" gear.
