The gas spring from Lanciar works just fine.  I extend my gear by the
alternate method about every 10th time.  Each time I do this the nose gear
comes down smartly - much faster than normal and ahead of the mains.  I have a
friend that does this every time he extends the gear and he has the same
results each time.  

My kit was 10 years old by the time it was completed.  The gas spring was kind
of whimpy by then, so I got a new one from Lancair.  This one works great.  I
suggest you do the same.  If you use one that's too strong, I think you stand
a good chance of pulling out the screws on the bracket in the gear well (if
you've mounted them i.a.w. the plans).
