When I was a kid we were always having tire problems with the junkers we ran.
The trick, which still works just as well, is to fill the tire, put some
saliva on your finger, (or suck your thumb) and bridge the opening at the end
of the valve with the saliva.  If the valve is leaking the saliva will tell
you instantly.  
In a word, Spit on it.
