I stays closed until your engine heats up, then opens to allow oil to go to your oil cooler. I discovered all of this when I had a problem with my C172 overheating. Seems it never opened up to allow oil to be cooled. I tried everything until someone told me about checking my vernatherm. Replaced it and it nows runs just fine. Terry P.
