Just for debate, there's another deice
system available that was working with Lancair awhile back. It's made
by Ice Management Systems, Inc. and they use a NASA developed electro
expulsive impulse system to shed the ice. An extremely thin strip (a
few mils thick) is bonded onto the leading edges and uses electronic pulses to
flex the strip and shed the ice. It can be painted over, so it's
practically invisible. They're now putting their systems on
many defense applications (like UAV's).
Their CEO spoke at my EAA chapter
meeting yesterday (they're based in my home town) and he says the system
can be added to any completed aircraft, uses about the same amount of power
as a strobe lighting system, weighs about 32 lbs on a IV-P application and will
cost about $20K installed.
