Sure sounds like moisture got to your alternator during the extra load of pitot heat (you did have that on?) and maybe into the wheel well where you would have wired the fuel probe plug.
Probably both. There are connections all over the place that is associated with the VM system that has good probability of getting wet. As I mentioned to Stuka, I will go on a crusade to waterproof all these connections!
