The rudder leading edge should be slightly wider than the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer. If narrower, the airflow breaks at VS trailing and attachment is lost. If slightly larger, the airflow can re-attach and make the rudder more effective.

PS - The same is true for the non-hinged curved leading edges of the ailerons and elevator.
