According to the AOPA, as of 3 weeks ago, a radio license is still required in Canada. However, crossing the border 4 times in the last week, no one has asked for it. Come to think of it, they have not asked for any documents other than the passport. I applied for the license online. Filled out the application and paid with CC online and got the $100 piece of paper in the mail a week later. Quite a painless process, but not as painless as not needing one.

Actually no. You need 12" numbers for penetrating the US air defense zone (inbound or outbound). There is no air defense zone on the northern border so 3" numbers are OK as long as you are legal with them in the US. I happen to have 3" numbers on my Mooney (grandfathered in due to the age of the plane) and no one has said a thing about it in the last week of shuttling across the US/Canadian border in the northeast. You will need 12" numbers if you are planning a flight to Mexico or the Caribbean.
Crossing the border between the US and Canada has been a very pleasant experience. The officers on both sides of the border have been courteous, efficient and pleasant to work with.
