Just about to cut the main gear doors and had 2 questions:
With the adjustment for toe-in and strut vertical lie (1.5 degree max
forward) the gear door pin will not be parallel to the strut pivot
line. Is there any adjustment to be made in the placement of the gear
door pin to make them near parallel or is the gear door pin placed
perpindicular to the main spar and the gear alignment then done and then
let the door actuation linkage to allow for (moves with) the different
hinge lines?
Looking at some different aircraft gear doors has anyone ever given
thought to a 2 part main gear door on the Lancair. Moving the split
between the inboard gear door (hyd actuated) several inches outboard (to
allow for compression of the doughnuts on landing) and just making one
cut between the two. Looks like if the landing ground clearence was met
and gear door wind loading was not aggravated this may mork.
I appreciate anyone's thoughts on this.

[Ed... you'll probably find that there is very little difference
between the main gear strut perpendicular to the main spar and what
it will take to align the wheels with a bit of toe-in. If it looks
like it's getting excessive you might want to follow the lead of
one of our subscribers by providing the wheel alignment with a wedge
shaped spacer between the axle mount and the gear leg. That's what
I'm going to do to my left main. As for the gear door hinge, keep it
perpendcular to the main spar... the rod ends which link it to main gear
weldment will self-align.
As for using only 2 doors instead of 3, there are quite a few folks
who have gone that route. If I remember correctly they virtually
split the middle gear door down its center then attached the appropriate
halves to their mates. Needless to say this would be much more easily
accomplished if you split the door cutouts into only 2 pieces instead
of the recommended 3 and then reassembled them. Just be sure to
plan the interior BIDs to allow the inner door to close over the outer
door.
