You will find a few guys running a fixed pitch prop on a Lancair.  It is quite
a comprise on any airplane capable of 200 plus miles per hour.  If you pick a
pitch that gives even acceptable takeoff performance, you will not be able to
pull 75% at 8000 without excedding the recomended cruise RPMs.  If you pick a
pitch that alows you to pull 75% at 8000 at 2500 or 2600 RPMs you will have
very poor takeoff performance.  With a constant speed prop you get the best of
both worlds.  GO FOR IT.
