I would be very cautious about USAA. I have had insurance with them since ROTC
in the mid sixties and early on had excellent experience. More recently I have
never seen a company try so hard to squirm out of obligations. My current
claim has been in litigation for over ten years and in another claim, they
actually filed suit against me in an attempt to relieve themselves of the
liability responsibility. They selectively have raised rates for years after
an accident. There was a recent article about these practices in the WSJ and
other than making me feel better knowing that I was not alone, it angered me
that these practices are permitted by the Insurance Commissioners of the various
states.
Now, and this is important, if I am elected your President in 2004, I will craft
legislation that requires all insurance companies to write insurance for
whatever coverage (health, life, disability, liability, long term care, property
damage, etc.) to whomever walks in the door just as Motel 6 or Wendys or any
local lunch counter has to serve all the public regardless of whatever prejudice
du jour might exist. How's that for a first plank?
