Mike,
The reason your engine is backfiring is because of the excess fuel burning
in the exhaust system due to too rich a setting.

When I am leaning at altitude, I lean until the engine backfires then I richen until it runs smoothly.
If richness is causing the backfire, why is the engine backfiring when it is too lean?
