      On our LIV we removed the factory plating with light emery cloth sanding.  We then blued the whole leg with gun blueing.  That was in 1995.  Works very well.  On one or two occasions where we needed  a touch-up, we simply lightly sanded the area with fine paper, followed by another application of gun blue. Never has rusted, looks very nice, easy to maintain.
