Charlie: I had a less dramatic experience caused by a similar kickback.
Undetected damage caused by (I think) kickbacks resulted in a cracked then
broken housing on the B & C starter on my Lyc O-320 eqpt Long EZ. The
starter finally gave up and moved far enough away from the flywheel that it
would not engage. This of course happened at a most unfortunate time and
location--half way down the Baja on Easter eve. However, after a day's worth
of fretting and some chewing gum I was able to make a field repair and return
home. Bill Bainbridge was quick with a starter fix and I rewired the ign to
remove the key switch and install two mag toggles and a starter push button.
This arrangement allows me to spin the motor and then fire the ign--an
arrangement similar to the change you described. I find this simple, more
positive arrangement works fine and have had no kickback problems or broken
housings over several years of use. You will like it!! paul
