Walter, I stuck them on all the Jim Weir antennas I built, however they are
really needed on antennas that transmit such as Com antennas. On the other
hand, since my VOR works so well with them, I'd go ahead and put them on all
your homemade units - sure can't hurt.

Further, if I remember, I think Jim recommends that they be spaced by about
thickness of a toroid (approx. 5/32 to 1/4 inch) starting close to the point
where you break out the conductors.
