The epoxy I discarded many years ago was Shell DPL-862 (I think) with the
TETA hardener. I might have been tempted to toss that stuff away regardless,
due to the reduced hazards of Jeffco.
The original question was where out-of-date epoxy and hardener could be
safely used. I would opt for micro only. After all, every epoxy joint is
holding **something** together, and I don't want any of those joints to fail.
If the armrest pops off I'm probably going to survive, but I guarantee you
that my passenger would never fly in that airplane again! ("That's the same
stuff holding your WINGS together!!!") I already get enough grief about
"those two little bolts holding the wings on" from people who don't
understand that these are the biggest aircraft bolts I've ever seen in a
light aircraft. It would be hard to explain away a bunch of cracked epoxy
joints with "Oh, that's only secondary structure. Don't worry about it."
I find that I use up an entire gallon of epoxy in a slow building year, and
more when I'm really cranking. So I'm rarely tossing out expired epoxy,
although it has happened on occasion. Discarding out-of-date stuff is
therefore not a significant expense for me. I write the date I received it
on the bottle with a Sharpie marker so I don't forget.
I guess I need to close my tail this summer. My hysol will be expiring in
October. Now THAT stuff is expensive to replace!
