I second Steve Colwell's lower limit of 65F for epoxy. I don't get good
results with wet out below this temperature, and the one or two layups I did
were excessively resin-rich. 65 F is my lower limit.
Concerning old Jeffco, I never did understand why Lancair gave us a kit that
takes years to build with 7 gallons of "good-for-12-months-only" epoxy at the
beginning. Why didn't they send me coupons for the epoxy which I mail in as
I need it? Or just cut the price of the kit by the price of the epoxy? Or
just keep the extra money themselves rather than send me something which has
the potential for hurting me if I don't use it up in time? I mean, I know
they're trying to send a complete kit, and they do a pretty fine job of this
in general, but epoxy is one of those places where the "complete kit" concept
doesn't work.
I'd recommend that if they want to sell a complete kit, send one gallon of
epoxy plus coupons good for the rest. Of course, we pay shipping for the
epoxy as we order it, and those guys with the
ultra-whiz-bang-super-fast-build-in-100-hours kits can simply cash in all
their coupons at the beginning. And slowpokes like me can send them in once
a year.
I gave away 6 gallons of the stuff to an EAA buddy that also builds boats. I
suppose I could use the old Jeffco for micro, which has no structural value
anyway (but not flox, which does have structural value). In my opinion
that's probably the only place to use the old stuff. However, I don't keep
any expired epoxy or Hysol in my shop. Period. This way, I'll never grab
the wrong stuff. I mean, the stuff doesn't disintegrate after 366 days, but
I don't know how the strength degrades, so why take chances?
