I used a gravity feed HVLP DeVilbus (sp) which used a zip loc bag in the cup so one could paint upside down. I would recommend searching the archives for Joe's articles which helped me very much since I had never painted with anything but an aerosol can. I don't have a 'show' airplane but have received numerous compliments on the paint job. Problems: it takes way too much time so one is tempted to quit the block sanding too early. What I would do differently: build my hangar first so I would have a clean, heated and well lit place to paint. I would also 'beef' up the lower half of the cowl more in the exhaust pipe area and the area next to the cyl heads since I will eventually have to repaint it. I probably did not allow enough clearance in those areas for the higher heat.... I used the short cowl with a 0-320 engine and it is a tight fit.
