Subject: Lycoming light weight starter
I was concerned to read that the Sky Tec starter solenoid, the one that
Lycoming bypasses, was being blamed for the burn up of the starter switch
contacts on the combined mag and starter switch. I have the same set up and
my battery cable goes direct to the starter where it is connected to the
starter via the first solenoid.
I checked with Sky Tec and they said that they had not had reports of burnt
up starter switches. The man I spoke to said that in his opinion the
starter switch contact should be rated for 10 amps and a diode across them
is recommended.
www.skytecair.com will get you into their site and "troubleshooting" will
supply you with a diagram.
This potential problem has serious fallout if your starter solenoid fails
closed. An indicating light will help but I will go with prevention any
day......Regards.....Ian Crowe
