I have not gotten to that stage yet on my ES, but I have talked to a bunch
of ES builders who have gotten beyond that step. Every one of them report
that it goes much better if you do the opposite order just as you mention.
Those that followed the order described in the manual reported some
difficulty and frustration. I have plan on doing the lower fairing first.
