However, you have to find the right place and ensure they have a= track record of success. You also have to do all the studying BEFORE embarking on the courses. I was travelling over to the USA from the UK s= o it had to work first time for me, thus I took the writtens in the Uk befo= re setting out. For the written exams I did weekend residential courses backed up by a huge amount of home study and use of a copy of Jeppesen's FlitePro software. This is an IFR trainer which is approved by the FAA a= nd it is really good. I did an 8-day Accelerated Instrument Course with Double Eagle Aviation a= t Tucson International, AZ. The owner of the school (Mike Garcia) perfecte= d the syllabus and attracts very good CFII's. I hasten to add that I was 'brain dead' after about 4 days and had to have a day off so it took me 1= 0 days to complete the IR. During the IR they knew I wanted to carry on an= d do the Commercial so the syllabus was blended so that I could complete th= e outstanding exercises in the last couple of days. They use an independen= t FAA Examiner and the standards are very high. Tucson is a delightful pla= ce to fly but the conditions make for turbulence which, under the hood, mimi= cs the very worst IFR conditions. It is therefore a realistic scenario. On= e month after gaining my IR I flew a Glasair from East to West under IFR so= the training must have been pretty good. I certainly recommend Double Eagle and I looked at a whole host of schools all over the US before embarking on the long trip from the UK. They have a website, a new fleet= of C172's for IR training and very good deals with local airport hotels. I was slightly sceptical about the value of accelerated courses but I believe the total commitment needed, on the part of both the Instructor a= nd the student, makes for just the right environment for IR training.
